Philadelphia's Simons Recreation Center Wins $1.5 Million State Grant for Renovations
State Senator Art Haywood and Mayor Cherelle Parker announced on October 23, at a press conference outside the construction site of Simons Recreation Center III in Philadelphia, that the center has received a $1.5 million state grant for major renovations. Representatives of Mt. Airy CDC joined the announcement.
The funding was awarded to Mt. Airy CDC through Pennsylvania's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) and will expand athletic facilities, upgrade recreational spaces and improve accessibility for Northwest Philadelphia.
A broader renovation of the center is already under way, including a new boxing and gymnastics building, gymnasium and ice rink upgrades, accessibility improvements, a STEM and esports lab and site murals, with substantial completion expected at the end of 2026. Parker said the expanded Simons center will serve Northwest Philadelphia for decades.
