San Diego International Airport Holds Triennial Full-Scale Emergency Exercise AIREX

SAN DIEGO, California — San Diego International Airport conducted AIREX, its triennial full-scale emergency exercise, on October 23 in San Diego County. Led by Susie Preiser, the airport's manager of emergency management, the exercise simulated an aircraft emergency involving a hijacking, a bombing and injured passengers, testing the airport's readiness for a real crisis.
Participating agencies included Port of San Diego Harbor Police, FBI San Diego, aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) crews, San Diego Fire-Rescue, Falck, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), with support beyond the airfield from the American Red Cross, the FBI's victim assistance team, the Airport Authority's incident support team and a Japan Airlines go-team. Volunteers portrayed hostages, injured passengers and emotionally distressed travelers and helped with check-in and logistics to create a realistic training environment.
The Airport Authority said bringing partners together tests procedures, strengthens communication and builds coordination under pressure. Under FAA rules, every certificated airport must hold a full-scale mass-casualty exercise on its airfield every three years.
