DURHAM, North Carolina — A Durham County jury on Friday afternoon, October 23, found Miguel Salguero-Olivares guilty of first-degree murder, rape, sexual offense and burglary in the killing of University of North Carolina student Faith Hedgepeth.

Hedgepeth, a UNC-Chapel Hill junior, was found beaten to death in her off-campus apartment in Chapel Hill on September 7, 2012; she was 19. The case went unsolved for years until September 2021, when DNA evidence led police to arrest Salguero-Olivares, nine years after the killing.

The trial in Durham reached its 19th day on Friday, including jury selection. On Wednesday the defense made the surprising decision to call no witnesses, resting after the prosecution finished; the jury began deliberating Thursday and asked to review summaries of lab reports and fingerprint readings. The case now moves to sentencing. Hedgepeth's family and the UNC community had waited more than 14 years for the verdict.
