ICE Arrests Salvadoran Man in East Charlotte; His U.S. Citizen Brother Questions the Stop at Friday News Conference

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Ricardo Portillo Guzman during a targeted operation in east Charlotte on Wednesday, October 22, near the intersection of Idlewild Road and Idlebrook Drive in Mecklenburg County, The Charlotte Focal reported on October 23.
ICE said Guzman, who is from El Salvador, entered the United States illegally in 1988 and later received a green card, and that his criminal history — including felony convictions for selling amphetamine and carrying prohibited or concealed weapons — makes him removable. Guzman's brother, Atilio Portillo, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was driving him to work when agents stopped the vehicle. Portillo said he was detained briefly and then released, and that agents broke the vehicle's windows and pointed guns at him.
At a Friday news conference organized by Siembra NC, Portillo said agents did not tell him whom they were looking for after he identified himself as a citizen. ICE said its officers are trained to use the minimum force necessary to address dangerous situations and protect the public and officers. It remains unclear where Guzman is being held or what immigration proceedings he may face.
