New Mexico's Cobre School District Food Service Wins Golden Chile Award for Local Ingredients and Scratch Cooking

The food service department of New Mexico's Cobre Consolidated Schools has received the Golden Chile Award, recognizing its work to provide nutritious school meals while supporting the state's agriculture.
According to Silver City Radio's local news report on Thursday, October 22, through the state's NM Grown program the Cobre district has built locally purchased ingredients and scratch-cooked meals into its school food service, giving students access to fresh food while supporting local producers. The report said the recognition highlights the role of school meal programs in promoting healthy eating and strengthening New Mexico's agricultural communities.
The Cobre district is located in the Grant County area of southwestern New Mexico. By putting local farm products on the menu, the district's food service creates a more direct link between students' trays and nearby farms and ranches, and school purchasing provides local producers with steady demand. In recent years the state has continued to promote local food purchasing by public institutions through programs such as NM Grown, with schools among the key buyers. The award gives the district's food service team state-level recognition for its work.
