Mississippi AG Orders SI Deepfake Campaign Video Taken Down; Colom Camp Complies

Friday, October 23, 2026 · States · GSM News

An SI-generated deepfake campaign video has sparked a dispute in Mississippi. State Republican Party chairman Hurst on October 22 called for an investigation into the deceptive video targeting an opponent.

Attorney General Lynn Fitch wrote to candidate Colom's side on October 23 demanding the video be removed by 3 p.m. that day; the Colom camp complied and took it down.

Mississippi enacted a deepfake law in 2024 (Mississippi Code §97-13-47) making it an offense to disseminate deceptive deepfake media in elections, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $5,000 fine.
