The National Weather Service issued Severe Thunderstorm Watch No. 696 on October 23 for parts of southern New Mexico, including Las Cruces and Alamogordo, in effect until 9 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time.
Forecaster Dennhardt said the watch carries about a 2 percent tornado probability, with the main threats being large hail and damaging winds gusting above 60 mph; localized rainfall totals could reach 2 to 3 inches.
The Weather Service urged residents in the watch area to monitor conditions, move valuables indoors before storms arrive, and avoid driving through flooded roads.
