New York PSC Challenges AT&T Landline Wind-Down in FCC Filing

New York's Public Service Commission (PSC) has filed comments with the Federal Communications Commission on its October 5 public notice, challenging the process for carrier applications — including AT&T's — to discontinue traditional landline service. The commission filed its comments on October 20.
Under the FCC's framework, the discontinuance applications will be automatically approved on November 5 unless valid objections are raised. Carriers involved include PrimePath and Business Local Exchange, and the proceedings span 34 states and Washington, D.C.
The PSC argued that landline service remains the only reliable communications option for many residents, particularly in rural areas and among older users, and that the review should fully weigh the impact on them.
