After Lone Kentucky 6th District Debate, Cook Political Report Moves Race From Lean Republican to Toss Up

With less than two weeks to Election Day, Kentucky's most closely watched congressional race, the 6th District, heated up further after the district's only debate in Lexington on the night of October 22. On October 23, the Cook Political Report moved the race from Lean Republican to Toss Up.

In the one-hour debate, moderated by FOX 56 anchors Andrea Walker and Will Keneally, Republican Ralph Alvarado, who is endorsed by President Trump, clashed with Democrat Zach Dembo, who is backed by Governor Andy Beshear, over taxes, data centers and corruption allegations. Alvarado called Dembo a “liberal lawyer” and an “environmental extremist”; Dembo countered that his opponent is a “failed, corrupt career politician,” accused him of shifting positions on the Iran war and tariffs, and said Alvarado's campaign website had played down the Trump endorsement after the primary.

The two briefly converged on some issues: both said the Iran war needs to end, and on tariffs Alvarado said he would vote to remove them if they hurt Kentucky jobs and sales more than they help, while Dembo allowed that tariffs can make sense in rare cases, such as targeted steel tariffs. The seat has been held since 2012 by Andy Barr, who is now running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Mitch McConnell. No-excuse early voting in the district begins October 29, and Election Day is November 3.
