Dale Brown, the legendary Louisiana State University (LSU) men's basketball coach, died on October 23 at the age of 90, prompting tributes from Baton Rouge to the national sports world.

Known as “Daddy Dale,” Brown coached LSU for 25 seasons (1972-97), becoming the winningest men's basketball coach in school history with 448 victories and leading the Tigers to two NCAA Final Fours, in 1981 and 1986. Just two days earlier, LSU had announced him as the 2027 recipient of the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award. Beyond the wins, Brown was known for a people-first coaching style whose influence reached far beyond the court; his most famous player was Shaquille O'Neal.

Brown's family said in a statement: “We have lost the most loving and most loved man any of us has ever known. Dale Brown always put others first. He always led with the heart. He fell in love with Louisiana long ago, and the people of Louisiana loved him right back. We are forever grateful.” LSU basketball and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) also issued tributes.
