TUNIS — Tunisia saw escalating clashes on October 22, with police firing tear gas to disperse protesters in a suburb of the capital while street confrontations broke out in two southern cities, deepening the political tension. According to Reuters, police fired tear gas on Thursday in Ettadhamen, a suburb of Tunis, to disperse demonstrators angered by the death in custody of a man detained on drug charges.

The same day, clashes erupted in the towns of Jebeniana and Agareb in the Sfax governorate. Also on Thursday, students in the city of Sfax protested after a schoolgirl died of a heart attack following a delayed ambulance response, calling for a university strike on Friday.

The unrest follows one of the largest anti-President Saied protests in years on October 17; this week a military court sentenced opposition figure Olfa Hamdi to four years in prison. (GSM, from Reuters)
