Community Petitions for Release of Chinese Restaurant Owner Detained by ICE; Gov. Hochul Presses

Friday, October 23, 2026 · Society · GSM News

DHS MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y. — The Mount Morris community launched a petition on October 23 calling for the release of Dian Zhao Lin, owner of the Mun Yuen Chinese restaurant, who was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The Department of Homeland Security says he is also known as Sin Zhao Ling (rendered "Sin Di Ling" in our earlier report), entered the U.S. illegally in 1998 and was ordered deported in 1999; his restaurant has operated locally since 2005.

According to the Democrat and Chronicle, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said on Facebook on the evening of October 22 that she had spoken with Homeland Security Secretary Mullin to push for the release of Lin and of German Machado, a detained SUNY Brockport employee. DHS responded in a statement that Lin will remain detained pending deportation, saying "a work permit or a pending application does not equal legal status." Video from 13WHAM showed Lin being put into a car by two agents on Tuesday, October 20; Mount Morris Mayor Bacon called it "devastating to the community."
