Follow-Up: Jiang Xiaping Says Half of Henry C. Lee's Ashes Are Buried in Yangzhou, the Other Half Remains in the U.S. and May Be Interred With His First Wife

According to a Da Wan News report, the memorial and burial service for Dr. Henry C. Lee, the Chinese American forensic scientist, was held on October 23 at Yangzhou Cemetery in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. His wife, Jiang Xiaping, told Da Wan News at the service that Lee's ashes had been divided into two halves: one half was buried in Yangzhou, and the other half remains in the United States. She said the half in the United States might one day be interred together with Lee's first wife.

Lee died on March 27 this year at his home in Henderson, Nevada, at the age of 87; his first wife, Margaret Lee, died in 2017. On October 18, the Double Ninth Festival, Jiang brought Lee's ashes back to Yangzhou, and on the morning of October 23 family and friends paid their respects and held a memorial service at Yangzhou Cemetery, followed by the burial, as GSM reported earlier.

Jiang had previously explained why Yangzhou, rather than Lee's birthplace of Rugao, was chosen as his burial place: in all their travels, including trips back to Rugao, the couple stayed in hotels, and "only in Yangzhou did we stay in our own home," so burying him in Yangzhou was "bringing him home." Born in Rugao, Jiangsu, in 1938, Lee moved to the United States in 1964, served as Connecticut's commissioner of public safety and as a longtime professor at the University of New Haven, and worked on more than 8,000 cases in a career that earned him the nickname the "Chinese Sherlock Holmes."
