Wyoming Receives $205 Million Federal Rural Health Transformation Award; First-Year Funding Applications Open

Friday, October 23, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the State of Wyoming have announced that Wyoming will receive $205,004,742.95 in Budget Period 1 funding under the federal Rural Health Transformation Program, 100 percent funded by CMS with no state match required. The state has opened applications for the first-year funding.

The program, created by the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, totals $50 billion nationwide to help states transform rural health care delivery. CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz said the investment puts patients first and drives lasting improvements. Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon said the program gives Wyoming, a state of far-flung communities a great distance apart, the flexibility and sustainability it needs, and thanked President Trump, Senator John Barrasso and Administrator Oz for bringing the program to fruition. Senator John Barrasso said this year's $205 million will support rural hospitals, clinics and emergency medical services, invest in training and recruiting doctors, nurses and other health professionals, and embrace new technologies. Senator Cynthia Lummis welcomed the release of the funding.

Wyoming Department of Health Director Stefan Johansson said the state is ready to begin the work. The state said first-year funds will go to four initiatives: financial sustainability for critical access hospitals, regionalization of emergency medical services, foundational incentives, and obstetric and trauma care.
