SNK's classic fighting game 'Samurai Spirits,' known in Western markets as 'Samurai Shodown,' is being developed as a film by The Arena, the new production company run by former Lionsgate and Sony Pictures executive Erik Feig and financially backed by SNK, according to an exclusive report in The Hollywood Reporter. Laeta Kalogridis, the creator of Netflix's 'Altered Carbon,' will write the adaptation.

Launched in arcades in 1993 and set in feudal Japan, the one-on-one fighting game is known for weapon-based combat — characters fight with swords or unarmed — and its most recent entry is 2019's 'Samurai Shodown.' Kalogridis also worked on 'Shutter Island' and co-wrote 'Terminator Genisys' and 'Alita: Battle Angel.'

The Arena is building a slate of SNK adaptations, including a 'Fatal Fury' film written by David S. Goyer, 'Geese,' an origin story for the 'Fatal Fury' villain, the animated series 'Fatal Fury: The Vow' with Skybound, and an 'Art of Fighting' project.
