Desert Shield and Desert Storm Memorial Unveiled October 24 Beside the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall

Saturday, October 24, 2026 · City · GSM News

At 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, the National Desert Shield and Desert Storm Memorial, honoring the U.S. service members of the 1990-91 military operations against Iraq, was unveiled on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The memorial stands at the southwest corner of Constitution Avenue and 23rd Street NW, next to the Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Its construction had been in the works for more than a decade; the U.S. House of Representatives authorized it back in 2014. The unveiling is the result of years of advocacy by Gulf War veterans and their families: 35 years after Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the troops who served long lacked a dedicated memorial of their own in the core of the National Mall. For residents of the Washington area and for visitors, the new memorial adds another site to the Mall's memorial landscape and gives veterans' families a formal place of remembrance.
