American Association for Chinese Studies Holds 68th Annual Conference in Houston, October 23-25, Focusing on Chinese Communities in an Age of Uncertainty

From October 23 to 25, the American Association for Chinese Studies (AACS) held its 68th annual conference at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Harris County, Texas, under the theme "Governing Uncertainty: Institutions, Society, and Chinese Communities in a Changing World Order." Papers covered China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and other Chinese and overseas Chinese topics across culture, diplomacy, economics, education, health, history, literature, politics and sociology; the program also featured a roundtable on the impact of the 2026 U.S. and Taiwan midterm elections and their implications for regional international relations, along with a keynote on the emerging world order. For Houston's Chinese academic community, the conference's arrival is a rare opportunity close to home: Houston is one of the fastest-growing Chinese population centers in the United States, and local scholars, students and community members can join an interdisciplinary conversation about the future of Chinese communities.
