Southern Durham Blanks Hillside 25-0 to Lock Up the Conference Title and a Fifth Straight Win
On Friday night, October 23, in the Tobacco Road Conference high school football showdown at Durham County Memorial Stadium in Durham County, North Carolina, the Southern Durham Spartans shut out the rival Hillside Hornets 25-0 to lock up the conference championship and their fifth straight win. The game was HighSchoolOT's Game of the Week. Senior running back Damien Hayes, a transfer in his first season with the team, carried the night, rushing for 150 yards and two touchdowns against the rivals. Hillside unraveled with mistakes from the start — two fumbles and a roughing-the-punter penalty — managing only 57 yards of offense all game and 32 in the first half. Southern Durham is now 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference after a 2-2 start; the two teams had shut out each of the conference's other four members, with six shutouts in their previous six games combined. Southern Durham needs one more win next week to cap the title season, while Hillside ends conference play at 6-3 and 3-1.
