Phoenix Police Release Body-Camera Video of Fatal Shooting; Family to Hold Vigil in Laveen on October 24

Saturday, October 24, 2026 · City · GSM News

On October 23, Phoenix police released body-camera video detailing the fatal shooting on October 10 at an apartment complex in south Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona: the man killed in the confrontation with officers, Andre Ramirez, was himself the person who had called 911 and brought the police there. According to the police account, at about 12:30 p.m. that day, officers responded to the Sunland Avenue area, east of Central Avenue and south of Roeser Road, where a caller reported a man walking around with a handgun and a knife, mumbling and unsettling residents, though he had not specifically threatened anyone. Only after entering the apartment did police learn that Ramirez had placed the call himself. Footage from three officers' cameras shows officers positioned with guns drawn beside two marked police vehicles, one of them also carrying a PepperBall launcher; as Ramirez came out of the apartment, officers repeatedly ordered him to raise his hands and drop the gun. Police say one officer first fired at least six PepperBall rounds, then another officer fired six or seven shots after Ramirez raised the weapon; after Ramirez went down and raised the gun again, two other officers fired about ten more rounds between them. Ramirez was taken to a hospital, where he died; police confirmed the weapon was a replica BB gun, and no officer was injured. Ramirez's family will hold a vigil for him at 5 p.m. on October 24 at Aguila Park in Laveen, and is calling for more de-escalation and community support resources for people in mental-health crisis.
