Mayor's $1.6 Million Publicly Funded Ads Promoting Five Ballot Proposals Draw Charges of Illegal Electioneering

Saturday, October 24, 2026 · City · GSM News

A report published on October 24 said the administration of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, in New York, is spending $1.6 million in public funds on an advertising campaign promoting five proposals on the November 3 ballot, a move critics say violates city law barring the use of public funds to support or oppose ballot proposals. The five proposals were selected by a 15-member Charter Revision Commission appointed by the mayor and include streamlining city hall approvals for outdoor dining sheds and street-safety projects; the city's campaign describes them as building a "faster government" and cutting red tape. Critics, including Council Member Joann Ariola, say the ads tout only the benefits and not the costs — in effect using taxpayer money to fund the mayor's political agenda. The mayor's office says the campaign merely encourages residents to vote. City law expressly bars officials from spending public funds to advocate for or against ballot proposals, and the two sides dispute where "encouraging turnout" ends and "influencing the outcome" begins. New York voters will decide the five proposals on November 3.
