From 6:30 to 9 p.m. on October 24, Gateway Arch National Park in St. Louis, Missouri, will host an evening program on the entrance plaza outside the Arch visitor center, officially titled “Gateway to the Stars: Ghosts of the Arch Grounds,” free and open to the public. Hosted by the National Park Service with the St. Louis Astronomical Society and Dark Sky Missouri, the program tells the history of the land at the foot of the Arch across different eras and the people tied to its fate, including Arch designer Eero Saarinen and engineer James Eads. Organizers deliberately set the event outdoors on the plaza, so attendees hear the history beneath the Arch itself rather than in an indoor lecture. Weather permitting, after the talk astronomical society volunteers will set up telescopes on the plaza for viewing the Moon and other celestial objects. The Arch, 192 meters tall on the Mississippi riverfront in downtown St. Louis, is the city's signature landmark. Pairing history with stargazing, the evening suits local residents on a night out as much as visitors getting to know the city's starting point after dark.
