Philadelphia DA and Police Commissioner Clash in Public as Krasner Accuses the Chief of Spreading Misinformation

Saturday, October 24, 2026 · City · GSM News

On Friday, October 23, 2026, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner publicly accused Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel at a press conference of spreading misleading information about a 2023 murder trial, as the city's two top law-enforcement officials clashed openly over the handling of an earlier case tied to a slain officer.

Eric Lewis, 35, is accused of fatally shooting Philadelphia officer Shayne Seiber and seriously wounding his partner, Hector Rodriguez, on October 10; federal prosecutors announced federal charges against Lewis on October 22. Krasner said Lewis had been charged with murder in a 2019 West Philadelphia road-rage killing but was acquitted by a judge in April 2023. Krasner argued the original investigation had serious problems and said he is considering charges against a former officer and a homicide detective involved in that case.

Bethel, speaking at the October 22 federal case announcement, called it "completely unacceptable" to publicly blame police while officers and families are grieving, and suggested prosecutors also bear responsibility for ensuring detectives gather enough evidence. Krasner responded on October 23 that misinformation forced him to speak again, and that the earlier acquittal resulted from investigative failure, not a prosecutorial failure. Lewis's new case remains in the courts, with the charges yet to be adjudicated.
