San Francisco Weighs Renaming 37 Blocks of Cesar Chavez Street as Las Campesinas Street

Saturday, October 24, 2026 · City · GSM News

On October 24, 2026, San Francisco, California, was weighing a proposal to rename Cesar Chavez Street, a thoroughfare running 37 blocks, as Las Campesinas Street — "women farmworkers street" — in honor of women farmworkers. Supervisor Jackie Fielder introduced a resolution of intent on Tuesday to start the city's review process, but the renaming has not been completed.

The name was chosen by a 27-member working group formed at the request of Mayor Daniel Lurie. The group met five times and received more than 680 online responses, with Las Campesinas the most popular option. City Assessor Joaquín Torres, one of the group's co-chairs, said the name honors the women who work the fields that feed the nation, many of them long unrecognized. The group also heard calls to restore the street's former name, Army Street, but ultimately chose to keep the link to the farmworker movement and look forward.

The proposal has drawn opposition: two residents of the street launched a petition saying they had collected 157 signatures asking the city to reconsider alternatives such as Dahlia and Hope. Replacing the street signs alone is estimated to cost about $50,000, not including labor.
