The Colorado Avalanche beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-3 on the night of Oct. 23 at Ball Arena in Denver, ending a two-game losing streak and improving to 6-4-1. Nathan MacKinnon led the way with a goal and three assists; Martin Necas added a goal and two assists, while Devon Toews, Nazem Kadri, Fedor Svechkov and Artturi Lehkonen also scored. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 31 of 34 shots. Toews opened the scoring just 1:08 into the game off a Necas feed, and Kadri added a power-play goal; Svechkov scored 24 seconds into the second period to give Colorado a three-goal lead. Tampa Bay answered through two goals by Jake Guentzel and one by Charle-Edouard D'Astous to close the gap, but MacKinnon's third-period goal restored the cushion and Necas sealed the 6-3 win with an empty-netter. Blackwood said afterward that the MacKinnon-Lehkonen-Necas line produces unexpected combinations in practice and that seeing it click in a game was "very special."
