Connecticut Marks International Bat Week Starting Oct. 24: DEEP Calls for Protecting Native Bats

Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection announced that the state will celebrate International Bat Week from Oct. 24 to 31, an international event held each year in the week before Halloween to raise awareness of bat conservation. The department noted that North American bat populations face serious threats, with white-nose syndrome causing catastrophic declines in several species, while bats play a key role in healthy ecosystems and provide natural pest control. Acting Commissioner Emma Cimino said bats are both an iconic Halloween symbol and an important part of Connecticut's ecosystem, and that fall is a good time to recognize the urgency of protecting native bats so they can continue supporting ecosystems and enriching communities. During Bat Week the department will highlight simple conservation actions, such as not disturbing hibernating or roosting bats, protecting habitat, and learning about bats' benefits to agriculture and ecosystems.
