Senate Majority Leader Thune Campaigns in Iowa for Hinson: Says She Will Win the Senate Seat Despite Headwinds

Saturday, October 24, 2026 · States · GSM News

According to an Oct. 24 CBS News report, U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune traveled to Iowa to campaign for Republican Senate candidate Ashley Hinson. Thune, from neighboring South Dakota, said the two states share "a lot of mutual issues - whether it's transportation, national security or water, a lot of things that tie us together." Asked about the political environment, Hinson said she is "focused on all things Iowa, driving down prices for everyone"; Thune added that she is "traveling all over the state." Asked why Iowa's race has grown more competitive than expected, Thune cited "economic and political headwinds" facing Republican candidates and noted that although the president carried the state by 13 points in 2024, midterm-year dynamics differ from presidential years. But he expressed confidence in Hinson: "She'll win nonetheless." The trend is not limited to Iowa: Republicans in Midwestern states such as Nebraska and Kansas are also in tighter-than-expected races. Republicans currently hold 53 Senate seats; Democrats would need to flip four and hold the rest to take control, and while Democrats concede nearly everything must break their way, the outcome is no longer seen as unthinkable. Iowa's U.S. Senate election is Nov. 3.
