According to the Maine State Museum's published reopening plans, the museum at 230 State Street in Augusta reopens to the public on Saturday, Oct. 24, with free admission through Dec. 31, launching the first phase of a major renovation. Going forward the museum will be open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Mondays and state holidays; it sits across the parking lot from the State House, with free parking nearby. The reopened space includes more than 19,000 square feet of new exhibitions, displays and gathering areas: new exhibits include "Vector: The Life of a Gulf of Maine Whale," a Maine quilt exhibition, and "Beyond the Postcard," presenting Maine history and contemporary life; the museum will also open the Lunder Education Center, its first dedicated learning and play space, and a refreshed version of the "At Home in Maine" permanent exhibit. The renovation took place within the Cultural Building, which also houses the state archives and state library, and addressed building code compliance, accessibility, technology and collections-preservation systems to maintain a stable interior environment.
