Heating Oil Above $6 Sends Shock Waves Through Senate Race: Reuters Reports Oct. 24 That a Kingston Republican Is Switching to Democrat Pappas

A Reuters report filed Oct. 24 from Kingston, New Hampshire, shows soaring heating oil prices reshaping the state's U.S. Senate race. Rick Russman, 80, a Republican for fifty years, will vote this winter for Democratic Senate candidate Chris Pappas because New Hampshire faces a winter of high heating oil prices. Russman said fuel at more than $6 a gallon is a huge expense and that he will have to supplement with a wood stove this winter. Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration show national heating oil prices have risen from about $3.50 a gallon a year ago to more than $6, while diesel, which is similar to heating oil, has set records above $6.50 a gallon. The Democratic candidate has linked the price rises to the Trump administration's war on Iran, saying the war disrupted global diesel supply; the White House responded that the Energy Department this week released heating oil from the Northeast reserve, though analysts say the move is unlikely to affect prices. A Reuters October poll found that nearly 80 percent of Americans blame Trump's policies for rising prices, including energy.
