On Oct. 22, South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden announced he had activated about 120 South Dakota National Guard members for a mission of about a year at the U.S. southern border. The soldiers are from the 155th Engineer Company based in Wagner; at the send-off ceremony, company commander Capt. Haley Deery told the troops, "We have a job to do and standards to uphold." For the soldiers' safety, the state did not release specific deployment dates or operational details. Rhoden praised the members' dedication, saying their work at the border will help keep South Dakota and the nation safe. It is the latest border mission for the South Dakota National Guard in recent years: last year, 50 members of the 109th Engineer Battalion were sent to the southern border, and other members were assigned to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations. The state said the soldiers are now preparing for the mission and are expected to be away from home for about a year.
