USA Today Spotlights Wyoming House District 11: A Rare Swing Seat in the Deep-Red State

USA Today's Oct. 24 roundup of one key midterm race in each of the 50 states listed the contest for Wyoming House District 11 as the state's most notable race. The candidates this year are Republican Dan McIntosh, Democrat Britney Tennant and Libertarian Ryan Shollenberger. The roundup calls it a rare toss-up district in the most Republican state in the country: voters already ousted several Freedom Caucus state representatives in the primaries, and a Democratic win in District 11 would further move the legislature toward the center, even though Democrats hold only a handful of seats in the state House. The context is that Republicans hold supermajorities in both chambers of the Wyoming Legislature, so a single seat changing hands would not alter majority control; but in a legislature with a relatively narrow ideological spectrum, the direction of a swing district is seen as a barometer of how much change conservative voters want this year. The primary turnover already showed that some voters want new blood, and the Nov. 3 result in District 11 will test whether that appetite for change extends to the general election. The roundup also notes that the seat's outcome still depends on local turnout and the candidates' own mobilization, and that neither side should celebrate early.
