Follow-Up: Deal Reached Oct. 23 to Restore 25 Citizen Voters in Maricopa County

Word came on October 24 that Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap is expected to restore the voting eligibility of 25 voters whose U.S. citizenship has been confirmed. The agreement was reached in mediation on October 23, after Attorney General Kris Mayes and Secretary of State Adrian Fontes sued over the issue and a judge urged the parties to sit down and resolve it.
The Attorney General's office said it has assembled the voters' driver-license records, and the recorder can restore their eligibility the same day after verification. The dispute stems from an Arizona driver-license records issue: in February, the county matched about 61,000 voter records against a federal citizenship-verification database, and 207 people were flagged as possible noncitizens.
The county attorney said in September that of 60 flagged voters who had previously cast ballots, 52 were citizens and 8 were not. The recorder subsequently restored 27 of them, leaving 25 without active voter status. Those 25 are now expected to be restored before Election Day, avoiding problems when they vote on November 3.
