On October 24, the California Regional Common Ground Alliance (CARCGA) held the first-ever California Locate Rodeo at Skyline College in San Bruno. Competitors checked in starting at 8:30 a.m., with winners to be announced at 3:30 p.m. The contest tests the field skills of professional utility locators: contestants must accurately identify and mark underground lines in four categories — telecommunications, electric, water and gas — while following industry best practices. Top performers receive cash prizes and advance to the finals.

Organizers said the event is more than a competition; it is a window for the public to see how locating work protects construction safety, with safety demonstrations and industry networking on site. Former state Sen. Jerry Hill attended as a featured speaker.

April Mitchell and Ashley Skeeter, co-chairs of CARCGA's marketing committee, said they hope the rodeo brings locate professionals together from across the state, recognizes their role in public safety and builds closer ties across the industry.
