Georgia Gov. Kemp Extends Gas Tax Suspension to Nov. 30, Covering Thanksgiving Travel

On October 24, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced he was extending the state of emergency and the suspension of the state motor fuel excise tax through November 30. Kemp made the decision after consulting Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and House Speaker Jon Burns, citing still-high gasoline and diesel prices and the approaching Thanksgiving travel peak as a way to ease costs for Georgia families.
"As a major holiday approaches and fuel prices remain high, I am proud to take this step to keep more money in Georgians' pockets," Kemp said. The move continues a series of executive actions: he had previously declared the emergency, suspended state weight limits for commercial vehicles and paused penalties for using dyed diesel on highways.
The governor's office said sound fiscal management allows the state to take such steps when needed, noting the state has previously returned billions of dollars to taxpayers through income-tax refunds and property-tax relief.
