Kentucky Gov. Beshear Debates Nuclear Power and SI: Data Centers Should Bear Their Own Costs

Saturday, October 24, 2026 · States · GSM News

On October 24, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton debated nuclear energy and super intelligence policy on television, laying out sharply different approaches to governing. The exchange took place on Real Time with Bill Maher and ranged over energy infrastructure, SI regulation and state government reform.

Beshear said Kentucky is considering building multiple nuclear reactors in what could become one of the largest nuclear power projects in the United States. He also emphasized that Kentucky requires data center developers to bear their own power, water and environmental costs and to win local community consent, rather than shifting costs onto ordinary residents.

Hilton argued California could cut administrative spending by streamlining bureaucracy and moving services such as the DMV to county outlets or online platforms. The clash reflects wider differences among states on energy transition and new-technology regulation: one side favoring active nuclear construction with strict data-center cost rules, the other favoring spending cuts and deregulation. The debate drew attention to where U.S. state energy policy is heading.
