Lewiston Youth Gun Violence in Focus: 35 Gun Incidents This Year, 22 Involving Minors

Saturday, October 24, 2026 · States · GSM News

On October 24, youth gun violence in Lewiston, Maine's second-largest city, drew renewed attention. Police statistics show the city has recorded 35 gun-related incidents this year, 22 of them involving minors, making youth gun violence one of the community's most serious public safety challenges.

Lewiston is home to many refugee and immigrant families from Somalia and other African countries. Police Chief Carly Conley said gun violence is among the most serious public safety challenges the city faces. Some local teenagers told reporters they have witnessed violence on the streets and feel unsafe.

Local media figures note that most of the gun incidents are committed by teenagers, and that several arrested youths were quickly released back to the streets by the courts, frustrating residents. The city has approved $200,000 in additional police overtime funding to expand patrols and enforcement, and is calling for reform of the state juvenile justice system, including more options for dealing with repeat violent offenders. Mayor Carl Sheline said the added resources send a clear signal to offenders, while stressing that parental involvement and accountability are equally key to reducing youth gun violence.
