Bilingual Play 'Juliet and Jul Yingtai' Staged in Jersey City on Oct. 24

At 7:30 p.m. on October 24, the bilingual play Juliet and Jul Yingtai took the stage at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City, New Jersey, for its second performance there. Co-produced by Red Theater (Zhuhong Theatre) and the Jersey City Theater Center, the play puts Shakespeare's Juliet and Zhu Yingtai of Chinese legend on the same stage, telling the story in both Mandarin and English to explore cross-cultural dialogue and the sense of belonging of the Chinese diaspora.
The theater is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to bilingual Mandarin-English storytelling by reinterpreting Shakespeare alongside Chinese folk traditions; the play is part of its bilingual theater incubator program. The executive producer is Anna Ray Dou and the producer is Qiqi Zhang.
The play premiered in New Haven in April 2025 and, after a successful run in Dorchester in the Boston area in January 2026, came to Jersey City this week for just two performances, October 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. For Chinese audiences in New Jersey and the wider public, it was a rare chance to see original bilingual theater close to home.
