Follow-Up: Arkansas Edges Gonzaga 76-72 as 17-Year-Old Freshman Thompson Seals the Win With a Clutch Three

On October 24, the University of Arkansas Razorbacks edged the Gonzaga Bulldogs 76-72 at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville to win the preseason exhibition game.
The closing moments were the most dramatic: with Arkansas leading 70-68 and just over a minute left, junior Billy Richmond III drove into traffic and kicked the ball out to 17-year-old freshman guard Davion Thompson, who hit a step-back three-pointer over his defender to push the lead to five points and seal the victory. Thompson, a freshman who reclassified to enter college early, finished with 12 points. Richmond III led the team with 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Jordan Smith Jr. did not score his first point of the game until a free throw with 19 seconds remaining.
Head coach John Calipari praised Thompson's nerve after the game: "He's 17 years old, and he made that shot." Arkansas's next exhibition game is on Wednesday against Memphis.
