On Oct. 24, CNN reported that a 31-year-old Georgia man was charged on Friday, Oct. 23, with attempted arson of a federal building and destruction of government property for allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in downtown Atlanta. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia, the defendant is Hinton, a Douglasville resident, and surveillance video shows him on the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 20, lighting an object and throwing it at the multi-story brick building; the object struck a fence and ignited, and investigators later found charred cloth, lighter fluid, a glass bottle and a lighter at the scene. Law enforcement officers later arrested Hinton peacefully at a home in suburban Atlanta, and prosecutors said he had no known prior criminal convictions.

U.S. Attorney Theodore Hertzberg said law enforcement's work in quickly identifying the suspect was exemplary and that such conduct would be prosecuted to the fullest extent. The building is surrounded by a metal fence and houses ICE offices and an immigration court. According to the announcement, if convicted of arson, Hinton faces up to 20 years in prison, and the destruction of government property charge carries up to 10 years; court records did not yet list a defense attorney for him, and the prosecutor's office and the public defender's office did not respond to requests for comment.
