The 46th Hawaii International Film Festival runs from Oct. 21 to Nov. 5 on Oahu, and the New American Perspectives program, presented by the Vilcek Foundation in partnership with the festival, spotlights five foreign-born filmmakers. At 6 p.m. on Oct. 24, the program film Take Me Home screened at the Consolidated Kahala theater in Honolulu. Written and directed by Liz Sargent, a Korea-born director known for adoption-themed work, the film tells the story of a Korean adoptee caring for aging parents and won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.

China-born filmmaker Michelle Zhou is another of the program's featured filmmakers. Her feature directorial debut, Big Little Things, told in Mandarin and Cantonese dialogue, follows a woman torn between family expectations and her true self, and will screen on Oct. 25 and 28 in its U.S. premiere. Vietnam-born Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan will hold a talk for his new book Never Say Die on Nov. 1 and host a masterclass screening of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The festival said the five films show the power and depth of American storytelling today.
