On the night of Oct. 23 (reported Oct. 24), the Indiana Pacers played their home opener at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and lost 121-105 to the Dallas Mavericks. The turning point came with less than a minute left in the second quarter: Mavericks star Cooper Flagg, dunking on a fast break, was fouled from behind by Pacers forward Aaron Nesmith, fell hard and injured his left shoulder, left the game and did not return in the second half; after review, officials assessed Nesmith a Flagrant 1 foul, and Nesmith and Mavericks player Naji Marshall each received a technical foul. Before leaving, Flagg had 14 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Head coach Dusty May said after the game that Flagg has left shoulder soreness and will be evaluated in the coming days.

Even without Flagg, the Mavericks were led by Kyrie Irving, who scored a team-high 24 points; P.J. Washington added 20 points and 13 rebounds and Marshall scored 15 points off the bench, helping Dallas hold off Indiana's comeback in May's first win as head coach. For the Pacers, Pascal Siakam scored 23 points, and Tyrese Haliburton, returning for his home debut after missing all of last season with an Achilles injury, scored 18 points in his first appearance before the home crowd in 490 days. Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark also attended; she and Haliburton are friends and often attend each other's games.
