Kaifeng Embroidery Exhibition on View in October at Newman University in Wichita; Sister-City Friendship Embroidered Into a Screen

Throughout October, the Steckline Gallery at Newman University in Wichita, Kansas, is showing Love, A Sister City, a set of hand-embroidered tapestries from Kaifeng, China, presented by the Wichita-area sister cities organization in partnership with the gallery. The centerpiece of the exhibition is an embroidered screen of about 8 feet by 10 feet depicting One Hundred Horses, its fine stitching showing the mastery of traditional Chinese craftsmanship. The works were shown two years ago at Mark Arts in Wichita and have now returned, giving visitors who missed the earlier exhibition another chance to see them.
Newman University education professor Huachuan Wen attended the Art for Lunch opening event at noon on Oct. 1. Shannon Johnston, the gallery's interim director and chair of art and humanities, said she was pleased to share this special cultural treasure with the community. The sister cities organization, in a Facebook post, said it hoped the exhibition would celebrate the enduring sister-city friendship between Wichita and Kaifeng. The gallery is located in the DeMattias Fine Arts Center on the Newman campus and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with visits also available by appointment.
