On the night of Oct. 23, the University of Kentucky men's basketball team played a preseason exhibition at Rupp Arena in Lexington and beat Texas Tech 76-65. Transfer guard Alex Wilkins was one of the game's standouts, scoring 13 points with a game-high 7 assists in 29 minutes, and two three-pointers late in the game helped seal the win. Head coach Mark Pope reserved his highest praise for Wilkins's defense, saying his effort on the defensive end was elite, focused and determined, and that if he keeps it up he will grow into a big-stage player.

The postgame press conference also produced a light moment: when a Courier Journal reporter introduced himself and mentioned Louisville, Wilkins cut in at once, drawing laughter from the room — in the fierce Kentucky-Louisville rivalry, the joke showed how quickly he has settled into the team's culture. Exhibition games do not count in the regular-season standings, but they give the team a real test as it builds its rotation for the new season.
