At about 10:50 a.m. on Oct. 24, the Hamilton County Board of Elections office on Smith Road in Norwood, Ohio, was evacuated after receiving a piece of mail containing a suspicious substance, and first responders arrived quickly, with no one injured. The board said in a statement that only the administrative offices were evacuated, early voting was not affected, and after police assessed the scene the building was cleared to reopen, with voters still able to vote during the normal hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The incident occurred on the first weekend of early voting, and the board specifically told voters in its statement that polling remained open, voting itself had not been interrupted, and voters should come to vote as originally planned. The board did not disclose details of the suspicious substance, and police have not yet released further details. According to reports, Ohio is one of at least 33 states to have received suspicious letters ahead of the midterm elections, and Kentucky's state elections office also received a white powdery substance on Oct. 16. Election workers reminded voters that polling places are open as normal, that they need not change their voting plans because of this incident, and that the investigation is ongoing.
