Utah Coach Scalley in the Spotlight Again on Game Day October 24: Once Gave Back $2 Million of His Salary to Support the Team

Saturday, October 24, 2026 · States · GSM News

On October 24, ESPN College GameDay came to Salt Lake City to cover undefeated University of Utah football's marquee home game that night against the University of Houston, and the program again noted a decision head coach Morgan Scalley made in March of this year: he donated $2 million of his salary back to the team to support investment in players name, image and likeness rights. According to USA Today, Scalley is a Salt Lake City native who grew up in the Sugar House neighborhood; his father played halfback at Utah in the late 1950s and early 1960s, several generations of the family are Utah fans, and he met his wife on campus as well. Scalley was named head coach-in-waiting on July 1, 2024, and formally took over the team in 2026; his salary this season is $5.1 million, with the contract providing for increases of $150,000 a year through 2030. Scalley said donating the salary was a decision the whole family made together, with the aim of giving back to his alma mater. Utah is 6-0 this season and ranked in the national top ten, and Scalley's transition from defensive coordinator to head coach is regarded as seamless. That night's game was set to kick off at 10:15 p.m. Eastern Time at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, broadcast by ESPN.
