Vermont Chinese School Holds Fall Mahjong Class on Oct. 24 Afternoon, South Burlington Chinese Community Learns to Play

On Saturday, Oct. 24, from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Vermont Chinese School held a fall cultural activity — a mahjong class — at Brand Hall of Faith United Methodist Church in South Burlington, with tickets priced at $5 per person. The class was the October event listed on the school's 2026 cultural activity calendar, with registration closing on Oct. 22 and fees prepaid through an online payment platform.
According to the school's event introduction, mahjong is a tile-based game similar to rummy, originating in China in the 19th century and spreading around the world from the early 20th century, and it has risen rapidly in popularity in the United States in recent years. The class covered explanations of the rules and tile combinations, live demonstrations, and actual play. The school said playing mahjong helps exercise memory, pattern recognition, strategic thinking, and quick decision-making, and is also a good opportunity to gather with friends.
The event was held at Brand Hall, 899 Dorset Street in South Burlington. The Vermont Chinese School schedules cultural activities by month throughout the year, with a Spring Festival cooking class in January and a Mid-Autumn Festival dinner in September, and the October mahjong class was a fall cultural experience open to the community, suitable for families interested in traditional Chinese games.
