West Virginia University Rifle Team Beats Memphis 4748 to 4684 at Home on Oct. 24 to Hold On to No. 1 National Ranking
On Saturday, Oct. 24, the No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team defeated the No. 10-ranked University of Memphis team 4748 to 4684 at home in Morgantown, winning a matchup between two of the nation's top ten teams.
According to the match report released that day by the University of Memphis athletics department, Memphis kept the score close through the smallbore rifle portion, but after the competition moved to air rifle, West Virginia pulled away, with all five of its counting shooters scoring above 590 in air rifle. For Memphis, Achille Beretta posted the team's highest marks, with 593 in air rifle and an aggregate score of 1177; Victoria McClung was the team's best in smallbore with 585; and Megan Jaros scored 581.
West Virginia secured the victory on its overall strength in air rifle and retained its No. 1 national ranking. Rifle is a traditional strength at West Virginia University, whose rifle team has ranked among the best at national championships for years, and the home victory further consolidated the team's lead this season.
