29th SCAD Savannah Film Festival Opens Today: Helen Mirren Receives Legend of Entertainment Award With Opening Film A Talent for Murder

The 29th SCAD Savannah Film Festival opened on October 24 in Savannah, Georgia, and runs through October 31. The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) describes it as the nation's largest university-led film festival and one of the largest of any kind in the Southeast. Opening night screens A Talent for Murder, from Bleecker Street and LD Entertainment, and its star Helen Mirren will accept the festival's Legend of Entertainment Award that evening, followed by a moderated conversation and Q&A.
A Talent for Murder is directed by Anton Corbijn and written by Joanna Murray-Smith, adapted from her 2014 play Switzerland. The 106-minute film opened in U.S. theaters on October 23. Mirren plays Patricia Highsmith, the renowned thriller writer living in Switzerland, while Alden Ehrenreich plays Edward Ridgeway, a young man from a New York publisher sent to persuade Highsmith to write one final installment of her legendary Ripley anthology; Olivia Cooke also stars. The festival notes that Mirren's career has been defined by fearlessness and range, and that she has won an Academy Award, a Tony Award and multiple Emmy Awards.
The festival's Centerpiece Gala screens on October 27: The Debut, an A24 film directed by Jesse Eisenberg, whose star Julianne Moore will receive the Icon Award. The closing presentation on October 31 is Searchlight Pictures' Wild Horse Nine, directed by Martin McDonagh. The festival's lineup of gala and distinguished screenings totals 24 films, including Tony Gilroy's Behemoth!, Danny Boyle's Ink and James Gray's Paper Tiger.
