Trump to Announce Audi Plant Plan in Macon, Georgia: 200,000 SUVs a Year, Plus 25,000 More in South Carolina

President Donald Trump is expected to announce in Georgia on Saturday that Audi, the premium brand of Volkswagen Group, plans to build a new assembly plant in Georgia producing 200,000 SUVs a year, a U.S. government official told Reuters on October 24, with Bloomberg reporting the same plan the same day. The plant, to be built in Macon, Georgia, would assemble the Q7, Q8 and Q9 models; Bloomberg described it as a greenfield project with construction due to begin soon. Trump plans to make the announcement in Georgia near where the plant is to be built.
Audi is also expected to announce plans to build 25,000 vehicles in South Carolina, the official told Reuters; Bloomberg said the company would expand an existing facility there. Trump cast his midterm ballot in person in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Saturday afternoon before traveling to Georgia. Audi declined to comment on the reports, and as of Saturday evening Eastern Time the White House had not issued a formal statement; final details remain subject to the official announcement.
Trump has urged automakers to build more vehicles in the United States and has imposed significant tariffs on foreign-made cars and trucks. Bloomberg reported that Volkswagen is hopeful the announcement will yield potential relief from tariffs that have severely eroded its profits. The announcement comes in the final stretch of the midterm election campaign.
