Police in Milwaukee, a city in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, said a 4-year-old child was shot and killed on the morning of October 24 by a 6-year-old child in the city's northwest side.

According to the Milwaukee Police Department, the shooting occurred at 8:55 a.m. on Saturday on the 2700 block of North 53rd Street. A 6-year-old child obtained a gun and discharged it, striking the 4-year-old, who died at the scene. Police did not release the child's gender.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested for possessing a firearm, and police said criminal charges will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office. Police did not release the connection between the teenager and the two young children. The investigation was ongoing as of Saturday evening.

About two dozen family members, neighbors and onlookers gathered on the block Saturday afternoon after police had left the scene, and people in the crowd declined to discuss what had happened.

Milwaukee police reiterated their request that firearms be properly stored and secured with a gun lock, out of reach of children. Gun locks are available free of charge throughout the city, including at all Milwaukee Fire Department stations and Milwaukee Health Department-run health centers.
