UCF Stuns No. 2 BYU 39-31 in Double Overtime: First-Ever Win Over a Top-Five Team

UCF upset previously unbeaten No. 2 BYU 39-31 in double overtime on Saturday, October 24, at Acrisure Bounce House in Orlando, Orange County, Florida, earning the first win over an Associated Press top-five opponent in school history. UCF improved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Big 12, while BYU fell to 6-1 and 3-1 in conference play. BYU had beaten Notre Dame 28-24 a week earlier to take over the No. 2 ranking.
The lead changed hands repeatedly. BYU led 7-0 after the first quarter before UCF scored 17 second-quarter points to lead 17-14 at halftime. Both teams scored a touchdown in the third quarter, and BYU's fourth-quarter field goal tied the game at 24-24.
The closing seconds of regulation turned on officiating. As UCF drove into field-goal range, BYU defensive lineman Keanu Tanuvasa was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, moving the Knights closer. Kicker Will Stone's field-goal attempt was blocked, Stone recovered the ball and advanced it, and his helmet came off during the play. Officials enforced a 10-second runoff, ending regulation and sending the game to overtime. FOX rules analyst Mike Pereira and rules commentator Terry McAulay both questioned the handling of the sequence.
The teams traded touchdowns in the first overtime to remain tied at 31. In the second overtime, a roughing-the-kicker penalty against BYU on a UCF field-goal attempt gave the Knights a fresh set of downs near the goal line. Backup quarterback Keyone Jenkins threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Grayson Brousseau and then found freshman Tyren Hornes for the two-point conversion to make it 39-31. BYU drove to the UCF 4-yard line, but Bear Bachmeier's fourth-down pass to Walker Lyons fell incomplete to end the game. Jenkins finished with 293 passing yards and three touchdowns, two of them in overtime.
"That's the weirdest end of a game I've ever seen," UCF head coach Scott Frost told FOX after the game. "I'm proud of our kids. I'm happy for UCF." It was UCF's first win over a top-five team and its first home win over a top-10 opponent; the program's previous signature win was a 52-42 Fiesta Bowl victory over No. 6 Baylor in 2014. UCF fans stormed the field after the game, and the school could face a fine under the Big 12's field-storming policy. Elsewhere in the Big 12 on Saturday, Cincinnati beat No. 8 Texas Tech 37-24, leaving the conference title and playoff races wide open after both BYU and Texas Tech lost on the same day.
